Dads on Wheels: Dadsky-Klaw (Keith)

Bikes and The City in collaboration with BikeNOPA, brings you the weekly series: Dads on Wheels. Every Tuesday, we have be featured dads from all over the city +around the Bay, and the ways they get around town with their kids.
Please check both our blogs for the current profiles.
We are coming close to a series end so don't be shy and comment away your thoughts and leave comments for the featured riders!
For this occasion, Kristen (previously featured in the Women Who Bike series) also participated with her dad to complete the interview ---- we can see that awesomeness bikey-blood runs in the family =)

Dads on Wheels: Kristen's dad
How often do you bike with your kids now ….and do you bike with them for fun or also for taking them on errands, getting them to school?
Not too often as they are grown up and moved out.
For fun!

Kristen: My Dad took me and 6 of my bikey girlfriends on bike rides through Sonoma wineries for my 30th Bday this year. He saved the day by fixing bikes, fixing wounded friends and biking alllll the way back to the campsite when my derailluer broke off my bike! He's my hero!

If your kids are older, how did you get them started: a Skuut bike, a trailer-bike, training wheels or something else?
Training wheels.

Kristen: It was a long time ago and we lived in an apartment, I remember my Dad running along side of me. I also used to ride along with him while he would jog!

What’s the best thing about biking with your kid(s)?
It is fun!

Kristen: Totes!

What do you say to relatives or friends who think the streets of San Francisco are not safe for kids to bike?
Shut up!

Kristen: Hahaha me too!

What makes a route or street OK for taking your kids biking on it?
Less traffic, less worn road, less grates to dodge.

Kristen: Makes it better for everyone all around! The wiggle is so much nicer to ride on these days!

Is it even harder getting kids ready for trips if you’re traveling by bike?
Not too much I imagine as long as the bikes are easy to get to.

Kristen: Dad! Let's take a trip by bike soon!

If your kids have reached their teens, are they still biking? Do you encourage them to?
Not teens.

Kristen: I'm a 30 year old cyclist and my Dad completely encourages me! He is holding a fundraiser this winter for my Lifecycle team!

How often do you bike on your own: recreation/exercise or for transportation also?
2-3 times week (excercise)

Kristen: he skateboards to work sometimes! :)

Any advice for other dads who are thinking about biking on their own or with their kids?
Don't be a wussy!

Kristen: Ummmmm. No response!

  1. Ow I love your 30th bday stuff, that is the best!
I wish my Dad had cycled with me when I was growing up- he used to do road cycling back in the 50s & 60s but gave up before I was born. I didn't get into cycling til afew years after he died, but I think part of the reason I love riding so much is to keep his spirit alive.

  2. Thank you! My Dad is pretty rad. He supports all of my adventures and is the instigator of many of them :) Sorry to hear about your Dad but it is great that you are keeping his spirit alive! oxox KLaw2

  3. This has got to be my favorite from the series so far. You always hear about enjoying them when they are young (I am in no way implying that Kristen is not young) because they are going to grow up and get a life of their own. Well this dad and daughter have proven that good times can still be had when the child is grown. Good work.

  5. yea great post, seems like super rad active dad!

reminds me, teaching kids w SFBC i sometimes wonder why the parents use the service, as happy as we are to provide. too busy, or not bikey ppl i guess. some want "pro" instruction, then ride w kids, which is cool too. tho personally, no way i'd miss it.

    cheers to rad dads!
