Wednesdays of Who Wore What

Who wore what is a weekly series. And if you have any submissions, questions and of course fotos, feel free to share. All fotos taken in San Francisco.
This is not necessarily about being chic or into fashionable things or trends, but if you want, it can be.
It is about being yourself, what works for you and what makes you comfortable, confident and happy to ride your bike!

Time for the gentlemen on wheels to take over this week.
matching yellows
I captured this fast guy (don't all bright colors just make you go faster?!) on an overcast mid-December morning.
Why this works: The yellows make him very visible, and they add sunshine when the weather lacks it. Plus any guy wearing tights and shorts seems pretty practical, and layer-savvy. Some sporty outfits out there are good, I like my athletes.
Where: This is on Polk and Broadway, early morning.

Hugh
Hugh. Sup.
Why this works: In the winter, the weather can be fabulous+sunny for a lunchtime ride, to a foggy windy afternoon. A warm coat and a scarf are never a bad decision. Simple and functional is timeless. And his non-chalantness comes naturally =)
Where: This is on Hayes and Divisadero

All smiles
I forgot to ask this cute fellow his name, but if you know him, let him know he is interwebs-famous.
Why this works: Coat, backpack and scarf -- check. You are well rounded with a super smile! I also think you can always pair dark denim very nicely for work and for after hours, here he goes a bit monotone and it is office-casual ready.
Where: This is also on Hayes and Divisadero
These two shots were obviously taken before we had our 'heatwave' here in San Francisco (Mostly mid-60°s this week) but don't be fooled, the fog can strike anytime!

With love from: Illinois

I received this super nice photo and story from Illinois by Tim B:
Dad and his new Schwinn Varsity, May 1973
Dad and his new Schwinn Varsity, May 1973
Pictured: My dad's 197X (1974?) Schwinn Varsity.  Put some air in the tires, gave it a test run, and took it out for a GREAT ride  this morning. It needs to be greased, tuned, de-gunkified, and have all the other things done to it that have not been done in 20+ years.  But for now... Perfect. Solid. LOVE that bike. I've been window-shopping for road bikes for years, but I think my resources will be better spent "tuning up" this one. Love it.  If it ain't broke...

Blue bottle bicycle boys.

Well, isn't it a treat to run into these two fine gentlemen.
We are all in the getting coffee before heading to get more coffee society. And then some.
Love seeing local baristas around town, stopping by various neighborhood coffee spots. This at Sightglass.
Baristas who love bikes, and are so good at making coffee, and know me by name for years as a caffeinated customer of theirs --- That, is a beautiful trifecta.
mi favorite blue boys
I have seen Alex riding his bike all over town for ages, most times in the early mornings.
And John, he's got the prettiest blue eyes in the Hayes Valley coffeelands =)

Knit to knit you

scenic knit

The motivation for returning to work after the Thanksgiving break is low. The belly is way too happy and I am all for finding any possible distractions on my various routes to work, caffeine being the main big crutial distraction.
I have come across these adorable findings all over town. The knit bombers, knit invasion and whatever they are called, I like them a lot.
My pretty bloggie-friend over in New York Jennine found some super wacky pink-red sweaters, I am very likely to wear myself (the-coveted link) and my buddy Keoki shared a link Berkeley's yarn bomber "the Russian" (berkeleyside link). I am liking this movement of knitted pieces around the interweb, and even better to see them upclose. I'm sure our bikeys love it!

Blue bread bike, brioches, birotes and bigotes

Mariachi hat, bici bread hat
I love it!!
I don't think I had noticed that pretty painting of the panadero bread man on his bici.
It must be fairly new, so I asked the guy working if he knew who panited it - and he said:
"I don't know who or where that is supposed to be, it was painted by this guy that comes and works here sometimes, so he just put it up"

Well, whoever that happy bigotudo is (man with thick mustache) in that painting, smiling with his cute overalls and blue bike, even a running chucho as a sidekick, he needs to come visit me *right now* and deliver me some of that sweet bread and empanadas, to go with my coffee =)

Sir Paul is a known avid bike lover. This vegetarian can be found on a bicycle quite often.
Allan even told me know a reader of their blog spotted him around the time he had his San Francisco show back in July this year, while he was bicycling around Golden Gate Park – as long as his photo wasn't taken.

Here is Ringo, so cute!
and below, their music powered by Ringo's bike. How rad is that!?

Meet Catherine.

I met Catherine while some of my peeps and I were catching some evening snacks at this Pupusas spot off Treat st. None of us had eaten there and it tasted pretty damn good because we were so hungry. Anyways, somehow we were talking about bikes and food, South American and Mexican food, making me even hungrier.
Here is Catherine, I forget which Timmy tee she is rocking and that plaid backpackie is super cute.

Meet Zoëy

I met Zoëy, right in the middle of last week's Día de los muertos/Day of the dead celebrations, around Treat street.
I was quite happy she agreed I could take her picture, as I had asked with my El señor boobie calacas custome (I had thick mustache, no long hair, top hat dressed in black y everything) and she was so adorable + let me know she is a reader ♥!!!!
An absolute sweetheart, check out her lush fashion - so timeless and elegant with a dash of sassy pink hair.
I love her look ----- Great meeting you +your bike Myley =)

Women who bike the distance: Tracy

This is a dedicated space for women that kick butt in the everyday errands, commute and fun rides, and decide to take it a curious, wanderluster step beyond comfort to miles and miles ahead to see what's out there, do long distance rides, camping and explore the landscapes.
Please do leave your comments and/or questions for the featured riders and enjoy!

Women Who Bike the distance: Tracy

When did you start your long distance curiosity and where was the first ride you recall as being such a long ride?
I only recently started riding long distances, I grew up in NYC, so
bikes were my main means of getting around the city (when it wasn't
snowing), but I'm not sure if I had even rode more than maybe 10 to 15
miles in one stretch. I also never owned a nice bike while living
there, just a big heavy city bike that could be locked anywhere (which
I still own and ride around town when I will need to leave it
somewhere, my friends call it the resistance bike because it is so old
and broken). About 2 years ago I hurt my neck and all I could do was
ride a stationary bike, I started doing spin class and started to
really love riding. Once I was better, I decided I needed to buy a
real road bike (my blue and white Masi) and start riding for real. I
started by doing shorter rides to the Marin headlands, butter lap and
eventually I found out about a group of people that road down to work
(SF2G.com) and thought it was awesome, so I did my first 43 mile ride
with them and loved it. I now bike down from San Francisco to Mountain
View twice a week and try to do longer rides on the weekend.

What upcoming rides do you have +the location?
I will be riding down to work (in Mountain View) twice this week, but
I am planning to do a ride up North (maybe to Pt. Reyes or just
Paradise Loop) this weekend. At some point I will sign up for a
century (up til now I've done only 90 miles and less) I would love to
start doing more multi-day bike trips as well.

The 3 things that are a must to bring with you:
a snack
my phone cash, and a credit card in case I get lost
an extra tube, a pump and tire levers

Other helpful tips you have for women +men, who are new and/or curious about long-distance riding:
Riding long distance really sounds intimidating, but really its about
working up to longer rides. The more you ride the better you will get.
Bike people are also really friendly and love when new people join.
SF2G does a first friday of the month ride (http://sf2g.com/nrlb.html)
where they don't leave anyone behind, so it is perfect for anyone who
wants to start riding down to anywhere in the south bay. There are
also a lot of other groups that do similar things, the Velo girls have
beginner friendly rides as well (specifically for women). Things that
I have found really useful is having a set of real bike clothes,
having the pockets in the back of the jerseys to carry some cash and a
phone as well as the padded shorts makes the ride way more comfortable
(it doesn't have to be super fancy, many places have cheaper options
and sale stuff), carrying a backpack makes riding much more painful.
Also, water bottle cages on your bike. If you are riding to work,
brining a set of clothes to change into the day before is key. I guess
just carrying as little as possible on your person.

Favorite meal/beverage after a long ride:
Probably mexican or Indian food. Anything spicy and flavorful. A good
beer is always great after a long ride as well.

Happy birthday nano!!

Coming up this week is my baby brother's birthday.
Though he is not even a teenager anymore, he will always be my baby brother. No wonder parents always view their kids as 5year olds. I remember as if it was yesterday the day he began to stand up on his own. ***tear =)
OK, back to the now ---- this kid has biked all over the Golden State and earlier in March this year, he participated in the recreational event Rosarito-Ensenada ride

Qué badass. ♥Love you mucho banana slug!

Local biz bits: visiting Gwen at nooworks.

un window

The other day my friend Diana and I visited Gwen at nooworks clothing on Valencia street. I hadn't been to their new location since the shop relocated from their Macallister/Baker spot.
What you can find here is super cute bike-friendly dresses, sassy accesories and other cool things. It is localted on Valencia street, closer to 15th than 14th --- and conveniently located near fourbarrel coffee, so you can shop caffeinated and all.

Gwen is the orchestrating maestra behind many of the previous fun +fabulous shows and her newest fashion production pedal savvy (the most recent one taking place at the Mission Bicycle Festival in the Women's building).
The next upcoming show will be on November 6th for the SF Bike Expo. Mark your calendars!!

Last year's was crazy fun and it is an event not to miss!
Anyway, swing by to say ¡hola! to Gwen and the ladies at nooworks.
