Wednesdays of Who Wore What

Who wore what is a weekly series. And if you have any submissions, questions and of course fotos, feel free to share. All fotos taken in San Francisco.
This is not necessarily about being chic or into fashionable things or trends, but if you want, it can be.
It is about being yourself, what works for you and what makes you comfortable, confident and happy to ride your bike!

Well on this occasion, it is my turn to show what I was wearing for butterlap 2 weeks ago, first ride of January.
The temperature was in the low 40°s. I dont think it was lower than that, but it could have been.
oh hai

A little late night panda action. I'm pretty surprised that sharrow sneaked in the photo. Good timing (!!!)

The ride is about 18 miles and dressing for butter lap, as I would typically for other rides, layers are key. Often during the ride I get overheated if I overdress due to the monster hills (the one up to the Legion of Honor never gets easier...) but then I like to be nice and warm while just hanging out at a bar or with friends. For this particular ride, butterlap pretty much goes from side to side in the city, so it could be clear by the Ferry building, Crissy field is typically windy during the winter and by the time we get to Ocean Beach, the fog could be super thick.

Anyways, this is what I wore to earlier that day.
Before I headed back out, I switched scarves, threw a vest on and changed to my black mini skirt (which I think is a 'running' skirt) I like it because it has reflective little strips on the side. Pretty handy as most of butterlap during the winter/fall begins when it is already dark out and we don't ride past very busy or too-brightly lit streets.
The bright orange layer I have is thin merino wool which I am a HUGE fan, keeps you dry,warm,stink-free. Icebreakers are awesome.
work attire es riding attire
See, no rocket science, and if you overdress layers can always come off.
Don't let anyone intimidate you for longer routes. Working attire can always be riding attire.
+wow, my hair is getting long...

Los butter boys
Boys of butterlap. Jeans jackets and scarves, let's ride!
Why this works: This pretty much shows you can ride in whatever you wear when you walk down the block near your house or workplace, just add a bike (and a few layers)
Where: Somewhere in crissy field

reesie shows off her new bag!
Why this works: Reesie is layered in a very multiple layered San Francisco fashion. May be wool, may be cotton, she looks pretty warm. And she is showing off her bright visible mustardy yellow new bag, very cute!.

Wednesdays of Who Wore What

Hola all! I am happy to introduce you to a new weekly series.
Who wore what continues the flavor and style that I published with the 2010 Momentum Magazine "What to Wear" printed column which, its on-line archive completion of the number of columns wrote and photo'd should be up soon. Hope you enjoy this new series, and if you have any submissions, questions and of course fotos, feel free to share them either bikesandthecity[at]gmail or the social networks.
This is not necessarily about being chic or into fashionable things or trends, but if you want, it can be.

And off we go with the first set:

cheeseeeee
Calitexican and Michelle are ready to ride in the rain
Why this works: Boots are essential in San Francisco's moody weather. Rubber rain boots or
classic long black boots will keep you dry and warm. Say cheese!
Where: La Missión

- - - -
Bamboo bike!
Why this works: It's a bamboo bike! and he nicely posed to let me take his picture. Sharp casual. I'm also a huge fan of solid simple fun watches. Who wears watches? Cool peeps who don't depend on cellphones! Plus points.
Where: Polk street.

Alan
Alan. (Sept. 2010)
Why this works: It was a pretty hot that day. (SF hot: 85°F) A light shirt and jeans are post-work happy hour and ready to go.
Where: Outside the Boom Boom Room. The Fillmore.

- - - -
sweeney's earned sticker
Why this works: Ortlieb bags are waterproof, sticker-collection friendly, and they pretty much fit everything.
Where: Sweeney while riding butterlap. I think it would be weird to see him without it.

- - - -
with Arena =)
Arena and I meet for coffee. Taken by el Richie.
Why this works: Work, play and coffee time in between, layers are key. I don't know what Arena's coat brand is or which fabric/material it's made of, but it I like it! Looks super cozy, maybe it is also weather-proof and it is a nice olive green color that combines with everything. Even with the colorful citrus punch troll standing next to her =)
Where: Coffee bar, Mission district.

Boys, their bikes & coffee week: Frank

♥The boys are back once again for the September series week! Take your bikes+boys+coffee weekday dose of daily charm, from the San Francisco bike lanes. Enjoy the profiles of these fine men around our city! :D

All photos picked by Frank and credited accordingly.

Bikes:
1. "Red" is an old Specialized Allez for "dry" days. A friend moved out of the country leaving "Red" behind for me, and it's turned into my primary commuting bike.

2. "Blue" is an almost as old Cannondale road bike now with fenders for those "wet" commuting days. It's really a stunt double for...

3. My "nice blue" Cannondale road bike. It's for those weekend warrior road rides that I don't do often enough.

4. "Silver" is a Cannondale mountain bike I got in the mid-90s when seemingly everybody got mountain bikes even if they just rode on the road. I can't believe how many miles I commuted in stubbies and then slicks when I probably should've had a road bike all along. Now I just use it to haul stuff or attach a trailer.

5. My college junker mountain bike sits in the garage, and I should really do something better with it.
The Cannondale slant is unintentional, but I do like the monochrome look.

Coffee:
Definitely coffee. The single espresso is still the litmus test for any place. As my Italian friend says about the plain cheese pizza and pizzerias, "If they can't get that right..." If I'm hanging out with friends, I'll get drip or French press to sip more slowly. Once in a blue moon, I'll feel decadent and get a soy mocha.

Last year we tried to combine two Bikes and the City vices in a Tour d'Espresso and had a great group of java junkies. Of course, we didn't plan for it to be one of the hottest days of the year, so we had to make sure we people weren't the odd combination of dehydrated and overcaffienated. I had six espressos pretty much on the hour from 10am to 3pm -- nuts. They were all very good though.

'Hood and fave bike ride in city:
I'm usually in the downtown core but suppose I'm a sucker for the hills, perhaps after seeing European grand tour bike races mostly decided in the high mountains. Each year we seem to have a larger turnout for our tour of the steepest hills. More practically, I'd rather take a hilly, direct route that's a little more quiet than some circuitous, flat route that's more congested.

My first attempt to formalize the bike and coffee connection was in a short film I did about the six steepest streets in SF, Russian Hill Roulette. I was trying to tie those two with my favorite bands.

Bikes:
I have 9 and 1/2 bikes in my garage. Just like a lost puppy or kitten, I see the potential and want to care for abandoned bikes I find on the street and have grand visions of rehabilitating them and giving them to friends or loved ones. I've donated a few partial builds to the Bike Kitchen when I didn't feel like completing the project, but mostly I just hoard bikes. I have a few bikes of my own, as well- my daily bike is a Cannondale '88 Black Lightning I bought of Craigslist; my Surly Long Haul Trucker for bike camping; and my Ross bike I use for Hardcourt Bike Polo; and my Bridgestone single-speed for when it's rainy.

Coffee:
When I was a barista in college, and I drank Macchiattos, when a customer would order a drink with an odd number of shots, but if I'm having coffee with friends or in the office, I just drink a plain cup 'o joe. My favorite coffee in the city is Philz, because I consider it a rare treat. Plus, I went there my very first day I moved to the city and every time I drink it, I remember the wonderment and excitement of starting my new life in San Francisco and am reminded of how lucky I am to live in this city and how far I've come since moving here. Plus, it tastes amazing.

(Self Portrait at the top of Black Mountain)

'Hood and fave bike ride in city:
I live in NoPa- not on Divisadero, but actually North of the Panhandle. It's a great community with lots of bike riding families and friends, and local businesses and a great Neighborhood Association that supports biking- NOPNA. My favorite routes are those quiet side streets where I can ride and chat with friends.

Bikes:
I ride plenty, caught a bit of the vintage bug, and race various forms
of dirt for Sheila Moon so I've got lots of bikes.

1) Well dialed 12 speed road bike. Road rides(alpine, railroad grade,
old la honda, kings mountain), city laps, the occasional alleycat,
etc. Sharp crit-bike geometry. Medici Pro-Strada '83.

2) Rigid 29er. I bought this to be my cross bike for this coming
season and as I've gotten used to it I'm doing a lot of full mountain
riding on it. It's light, responsive, and fun and is pushing my
technical skill levels higher. Great for the Marin County Bike
Coalition "Locust" mixed terrain sorta-enduros that have been going on
this summer. Scott Quiring '07.
Mark on the Inside Line
Mark on the Inside Line by hotMARK™

3) Rack / CX / Overnight Camping bike. Midge dirt drops, Pass & Stow
front rack, generator hub. Fat slicks usually, cross tires sometimes.
Grocery getter / rando / farmers market / I want to see well at night.
I have also raced cross & soil saloon on this. All fun all the time.
Jack Taylor Curved Tube '84.

4) Path Racer / Fixed gear. Bars, restaurant, pastry runs, parks.
Swept bars, shellacked cork grips. I don't enjoy going down big hills
fixed but I always plot rides with hills so it doesn't get out as much
as it should. Colin Laing Curved Tube '06.

Etc.) Santa Cruz BLT which isn't mine and is sadly going back to the
guy who long-term loaned it to me. It was my race bike for most of
this year and a great Downieville bike. There's another nice old path
racer and a old touring bike which I haven't had time to dial in yet
so they've been sitting. Also an old specialized (dreamy late-90's Ned
Overend bike!) which is overshadowed by my modern dirt bikes and sadly
should probably go.

Coffee:
WARNING: this answer contains the D**** word and may not be suitable
for all B.a.T.C. readers.

In the past 4 years I've gone from vast quantities of tea and espresso
to just lots of tea to a little bit of decaf tea and coffee.

I like my tea black, strong, and so bitter that you couldn't drink it
without a splash of milk and a shake of sugar. Favorites include
Yorkshire Gold, Whittard Original, Rainbow bulk dept. Assam and Ceylon
(do your own blending!), Barry's, and TJ's Irish Breakfast. Sadly
decaf tea usually tastes like nothing. It's actually gotten me back
into coffee because compared to tea, decaf coffee looses relatively
little flavor.

De La Paz Coffee sponsors the Sheila Moon team and many local bike
races. Really great varietals and some light roasts for full nitro
coffee. Dry processed coffees with a hint of stone fruit flavor are
probably my favorite.

I love making iced coffee using the Blue Bottle New Orleans Method
(though I usually use Peet's french roast and skip the chicory). Cold
brewing keeps some of those roasted bean aromatics which I love so
much and seem to disappear in hot brewing. The concentrate is an
excuse to use lots of milk too.

'Hood and fave bike ride in city:
I live on the panhandle so I can get to anywhere easily. One of my
favorite little city rides is one I made up that I call the "figure
8". Up downey, up twin peaks blvd, down the south side then laguna
honda, north to 7th, through the park to 8th, west on lake, 15th into
the Presidio, washington, past immigrant point and turn on lincoln
towards the legion of honor, out to the beach and back through the
park. I'm also starting to enjoy exploring the Mt. Sutro trails for
some easy driving-free access to good dirt. Way more fun than GGP.

Boys, their bikes & coffee week: Matt

♥This week, I'll be posting a selection of photos I have gathered of the fine men that roam the city. This is a small series, don't worry I will feature more in the near, near feature. A third of my Bikes, boys + coffee trifecta for a dose of daily charm to add to your flirt factor in addition to your San Francisco's bike lane action :D
Matt

Bikes:
(#1) surly steamroller I adore, (#2) old carbon frame trek road bike held together with packing tape and whispered prayers, (#3) humorously undersized guest bike, currently AWOL after presumably ferrying someone home. I have also been known to ride Karen's bikes because she has baskets, and because it's fun to ride bikes that are way, way to small.

Coffee:
Iced, with soy. Coffee shop agnostic. I hold the radical belief that (*gasp*) scones are more important than coffee. May baked goods reign supreme.

Matt

'Hood and fave bike ride in city:
Of course I love me some wiggle, panhandle and butter, but cresting Bernal Heights early in the morning is spectacular. No matter how cold and rainy it may be in the mission, it's a whole different world on the other side of the hill:

Jason in the melilands.

Bikes:
I have almost as many bikes as I do toes. I believe I currently have 7 in the garage and 1 more on its way. I'm not going to bother getting into details other than I have 3 cyclocross bikes, two 'city' bikes, two mountain bikes. Some people say I have a problem... I'd like to think that I just have a healthy habit that includes having too many bikes and getting new ones often. I basically ride my city bikes most of the time to and from work.
All photos below this one provided by Jason

Coffee:
I don't really have a favourite coffee shop as I mostly make my coffee at home - french press, drip or cold-brewed for iced. I usually take an afternoon walk with my coworkers to Vega at Langton for our caffeine fix.
As for tea, I occasionally drink black tea, but I have some nice white tea I indulge in.
Porcupine-Rim-Moab-Utah

'Hood and fave bike ride in city:
I currently live in the Mission. I used to live in the Western Addition, Alamo Square, the Castro, and other places in the Mission. My favourite place I have lived in SF so far was at 18th & Harrison - close to great restaurants (Universal Cafe, Schmidt's, El Matate, et al), Rainbow, close to BART & Caltrain and easy to get anywhere in they city pretty easily.
I don't really have a favorite route because I like taking a different route when I go places to explore new areas - even if it is only for a block or two off the normal route I may take. Recently I have been exploring the Financial District mid-day and am enjoying the different scene.
My favorite ride in the city is possibly with my mountain bike or cross bike: Up Twin Peaks, across dirt over to Mt. Sutro and a few laps on the very nice trails there. Then some random out of the way detour on the way home through the Sunset / Golden Gate Park.

Boys, their bikes & coffee week: William

♥This week, I'll be posting a selection of photos I have gathered of the fine men that roam the city. This is a small series, don't worry I will feature more in the near, near feature. A third of my Bikes, boys + coffee trifecta for a dose of daily charm to add to your flirt factor in addition to your San Francisco's bike lane action :D

Bikes:
1981 Bianchi Super Pista: An anniversary gift from my girlfriend. I think the week I found this frame on ebay, I was going crazy and she took a hint that I had wanted it. She contacted the seller from the very start whereas I was at home trying to bid outrageously high amounts on the frame, ruining her plans to get it for me. In the end, I was so surprised by the very frame on ebay ending up in my hands two days before the auction even ended!

Ebisu All-Purpose: My main steed. Super practical, do-all, type of bicycle. I first set eyes on an Ebisu All-Purpose from Jitensha Studio in Berkeley because the bike shop faced UC Berkeley, where I attended school for undergrad. I would always gawk at the gorgeous frames in the window and making the occasional trip into the shop to buy a stem, some barwrap and some cheap trinkets from time to time. When I graduated and had some money saved up, I felt indebted to the shop owner, Hiroshi Iimura to buy one of these lovely machines from him so I took the plunge and ordered a custom Ebisu. It's my favorite bike to ride because I can really take it on any type of road.

Coffee:
I am a pretty black coffee type of person. No cream, no sugar. When I am feeling more posh and bourgy, I will drink an americano! I really don't have much of a sweet tooth so I like dark and somewhat bitter drinks.

When I am in San Francisco (five days a week), I spend most of my time in the Financial District. Coffee choices are fewer here, but I make do with my usual coffee spots like The Sentinel (also offers delicious fruit muffins) and Prima Cosa on Sutter that serves Illy. The coffee cannot compare to Blue Bottle, but it's pretty decent on a day-to-day basis. While I like Blue Bottle's Linden Street location the most, I rarely get to go there. My favorite Blue Bottle offering is the Koratie (limited to only two months out of the year).

Since I live in Oakland, there are a few East Bay spots I'd like to make shoutouts to because they are so good: Farley's East, Cafe 504, Subrosa and Local 123!

'Hood and fave bike ride in city:
I enjoy riding in NOPA area and through the Panhandle a lot with the occasional Twin Peaks ride in San Francisco.

My favorite route takes place in Oakland by going up Wildwood in Piedmont, through Butters Canyon in Oakland's Diamond District, over Grizzly Peak into Berkeley and down Spruce Street because it's so fast and nicely paved.

Boys, their bikes & coffee week: Robert

♥This week, I'll be honoring the fine men that roam the city. This is a small series, don't worry I will feature more in the near, near feature. A third of my Bikes, boys + coffee trifecta for a dose of daily charm to add to your flirt factor in addition to your San Francisco's bike lane action :D

Bikes:
Bikes (in the order I love them):
  • Cyclocross bike, with two set of rims for hitting the trails or the road. Motobecane Fantom Cross Team Ti.
  • Road tandem. Upgraded and rebuilt Raleigh tandem, which was required after a self induced crash.
  • Stylish city bike shared with the wife. Globe Haul.
  • Full suspension all mountain bike. Mountain Cycle Zen.
  • Grocery getter tandem. 80's Dawes Galaxy.
  • Unused road bike I should trade for a fixie. Motobecane aluminum frame.
Obliviously I have some "perfect bike" issues to work through, which is why I just started a new blog, wrongbike.com.

Coffee:
Going out - Blue Bottle in the Ferry Building. But my favorite is Peet's coffee brewed at home, sitting on my chair with my wife.

'Hood and fave bike ride in city:
I currently live between SOMA and South Beach. I love how quiet my neighborhood becomes when the cars are gone. I'm known for silly epic rides. However, my favorite is Headlands Loop which is always there for me.
