mucha música Monday: links sent y text alerts edition.

It has been a bit since last time I shared some música, so here we go:

× Janelle Monáe: Electric Lady
This is a very pop/happy song for my Darian taste, but so fun and light. Cheery is contagious, if you let it. lalalaaa ;) and I do love Janelle ♥

*H/T —via the fab LGRAB gals

× Li Xi, Everyone is Dirty & Sister Crayon
Last Friday I checked out both these bands at the Rickshaw Stop alongside hormones aka all-ages show.
It was great.
Big thank to my pal Mr. Cline for being rad and texting me that day as he would be in the band opening for them. Couldn't make it in time to see him work his magic a major psychedelic-musical ongoing crush via musical updates continues to develop.
This is his band Li Xi, hope to catch them again soon:

And these, also gal-driven bands, we got to see and they were just great.
I'll upload some fotos at some point:

× Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto
Had bookmarked this from something linking to this Vice article.

Sidenote: Anytime there is a Colombian event in the Bay, I really enjoy seeing those straw/with-the-black-lines hats, so cool!
party prep música
(Foto I took from Stern Grove 2009)

× Röyksopp & Robyn "Monument" (Music Video)
This will be a great pre-meeting warm up. Or making coffee in the AM in your underwear, more realistically the monument being that fresh cup of coffe, am I right?

× Charles Lloyd – Manhattan Stories Mini-Documentary
On a jazz note, another great clip, I really love listening to history/facts in music:

× Boiler Room Collections: EGON
I was introduced to BoilerRoom just this year, I am a fan. Also on soundcloud
“Boiler Room set up shop in Egon’s office in Highland Park, Los Angeles, CA as he digs through his own collection, playing a few records.”
I have had this bookmarked (clip is almost 2hrs) and have gone back to it since about June. Great listening, and viewing the LPs with liner notes peeking out. OH! :)
Enjoyed quite a bit the DJ notes here and there where each band was from when available.

*H/T two clips above — via long time blog reader+twitter pal always sharing great links @dirtycyclist

× William Onyeabor: Atomic Bomb
This is from end of year 2013 and just getting a hold of this, they played here back in May.
What a nice melody. This will be a great soundtrack to mid-afternoon workdaze navigations this week. What do you think?

× Melissa Aldana
A 21 year old saxon great young woman from Chile, now based in NY.
The interview is in Spanish but the CC translates, if you are interested. I think she is awesome.

× Phillip Glass: In the upper room Dance No.9
Endless emails? Long meetings? Jam to this. All the cosmic to your desk will gather and join team caffeine :)

*H/T three clips above — via my fabulous friend Nina.

× Bike To The Future (Quest science | PBS)
This isn't a music video, but it is like the Jetsons! The future is here.
Would you ride one? I'd love to one day visit North Carolina.

*H/T — sent by reader Dave H. of unctv.

Thanks for reading and have a great week ahead.

mucha música Monday: June.

June has arrived, and so has some música.
More to come, and more frequently to share with you through the second half of the year – I hope :)

To celebrate this month's quick arrival, let's start with June Carter. y Johnny Cash. Good bye is all she wrote.
× Johnny Cash & June Carter: Jackson
Johnny Cash & June Carter singing Jackson at the Ralph Emery Show. This is from 1967.

× Los Amigos Invisibles: Stay
Their new album recently dropped, which I have yet to listen to in full. They are playing at the New Parish (Oakland) on June 13th. They're a pretty fun band to see live, if you have the chance to.

× Lykke Li: No rest for the wicked
Super into the lyrics. Hearts are breakeable. Music will be made.

× The Mantles: Hello
Found this band via a slumberland records post on the BayBridged
›› San Francisco/Oakland's The Mantles have been charting a unique path through the Bay Area's storied garage/pop scene since 2007.

× charliefoxtrotny: Tell the world anything
this isn't music per se, but it is human melodies in the forms of words - I dig them.
There are approx. 4 of them in their  youtube channel.
Tacos!!

From the Illini dispatches:
My pal Tim is always sending me awesome notes, and earlier this year he shared these two fun songs:
× Phish: Fee
Millie – but the lyrics here sound like MELI (!!) and coffee, and cats … too cool :)

× Balkan Beat Box: Hermetico

---
I've signed on to Spotify and Rdio, but so far I really like and prefer the Soundcloud mobile app, works for me and mi curious journeys. There are also a ton of archived talks/interviews and smaller indie bands w/their music uploads to just listen without much fuss, which I really like.
It still mostly use CDs and listen to local AM/FM, and a portable radio which I always have with me.
Yes that is true.
What app or site for streaming music are you currently into?

mucha música Monday

Thee Oh Sees: Penetrating Eye
yes.

Jaakko Eino Kalevi: No end
Found this because it's under “Weird World Record” I hit play.

Ana Tijoux: Sacar la Voz
Ana is playing here in SF this week, and it is sold-out. When will I learn to get tix more than a few weeks ahead. Story of my life. :/
Here is a goodie from 2012.

Cibo Matto: Emerald Tuesday (Live on KEXP)
Speaking of missing tours, I missed Cibo Matto in Feb. Cool they have a new record out. Last I saw Miho Hatori (1/2 of the band) was in 2007 here in San Francisco, with the now defunct Los Abandoned ♥ at the GAMH. It was los awesome.

This is also a released Cibo Matto video from Dec.2013:

David Lynch: The Big Dream (Moby Reversion Featuring Mindy Jones)
This is slow and gloomy, the perfect dose from David Lynch for a Monday morning. From his channel:
“The Big Dream (Moby Reversion Featuring Mindy Jones) Taken from The Big Dream Remix EP 12" on clear red vinyl. Out 19th April 2014 exclusively for Record Store Day. Limited to just 1000 copies worldwide.”

La Luz: Morning High (Live on KEXP)
Roaming the internet I found about La Luz band, if Stereolab had kids or nieces and they were raised in California/the west coast and started a band – it would sound like these young women from Seattle. I like it, sounds promising. Stoked for up & coming all-women bands ♥

Stereolab: French Disco
Per the above video, a refresher – one of THE best band in the early 1990s. fcukyeah stereolab:

St. Vincent: Digital Witness
Playing at the Fox in Oakland this Saturday. This video feels like the weekly grind w/o any unexpected boom at the end …

Split Screens: The Sinner
Another local show happening also on Saturday at the Bottom of the Hill, which I just recently learned from the bay Bridged [posted: Split Screens to release new 7-inch, “The Sinner”] Good easy track to listen after a meeting, or something.

mucha música Monday: March

Hi.
February is a personal eternity but I cherish its deep meaning. I welcome March with music and a sincere smile. Music makes most situations ,and in some instances cubicles, just a bit better, right?
Have a great start of the month –
xxomeli

Karen O: The Moon Song [KCRW live recording]
Saw this performed this past weekend at the Oscars. Very sweet, can't wait to see the movie “Her.”
Writer/Director Spike Jonze, Singer Karen O and Production Designer KK Barrett performed a special acoustic version of the Oscar-nominated "The Moon Song" for Morning Becomes Eclectic.

And the Giraffe: Sorry
Awhile ago I received a sweet email from Nick (thanks!) introducing his band: Nashville-based And the Giraffe:
We recently strapped a film camera to the front of a bicycle with some spare rigging equipment we found in our friend/director's garage and some duct tape. The whole video cost us about $200 to make and we got to ride around LA and out into the desert for some gorgeous shots at the end. It really offers a unique perspective of being able to see yourself as you ride a bike!”

Their video is filmed en ELAY. Have not lived there, so I love visiting Los Angeles. Also, would love to one day visit Nashville –

Arctic Monkeys: Do I want to know?
Had heard the song and liked it but had not yet seen the video, very playful. Directed by David Wilson–
Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? from David Wilson on Vimeo.

Chulius and The Filarmónicos: Leita
Because us gals wake up with pushup bras everyday. Good light song to not take ourselves too seriously, right :)

Angel Olsen: Hi-Five
Just learned because of her words “I am the only one ” via the LATimes [Angel Olsen learns there's nothing wrong in a little selfishness] and she is playing tonight at the Great American Music Hall.

Guacamole: Recuerdos
Nice! They have a small amount of work online, but sound very promising. and delicious :)

mucha música Monday: febrero edition

Santa Sabina: Estando aqui no estoy
Having a teenager niece, I retract to music that I liked at her age and we talk about it. Last week I introduced her mid-90's björk songs and Rita Guerrero, the vocalist for Santa Sabina (Mexico). I got to see her once in concert, and it was a very indie/feminist inspiration, before I really knew what that meant. Rita passed about 3 years ago at age 46 :(

Hibbity Dibbity: Gold
Nice little tune that I found myself listening while reading the interwebs.
–found via the BayBridged

St. Lucia: When the Night [2013]
I forget how I came across this song. It's a bit fast if you like to wake up and listen to something a little upbeat while making coffee. It's 7 minutes, so boil water, grind and frenchpress after 5 minutes. It works out for me. Kinda want to wear fluorescent leg warmers, though.

Emmet y Edith Gowin
This particular video isn't about music per se. It is about love, craft and photography. Partnership from both ends of the lens, and in life. Such a beautiful relationship, I enjoyed viewing it so much.
–found via Ike Edeani

David Lynch: And Light Shines
This one dropped last week. It is just a tad, tiny bit, Negativland.

Ana Tijoux: Vengo
Ana's new album drops in March. Her new single Vengo (I come) became available a couple of weeks ago. She is such a good MC.

María del Pilar: Quien Eres
No better way to start the week, and the month with a new Pilar video. She is a total belleza musical! Her music is such a dose of mucho happy con glitter. ♥♥♥

Pharrell WIlliams: Happy (Dubs edition)
Speaking of happy, I love basketball. Love the dubs.
Last Thursday we got to see the premiere of this Golden State version video at the game versus LA Clippers during a prolonged timeout (nationally televised-game timeouts aka commercials, can be quite lengthy) with my friend Butter Bill at the Oracle Arena.
And Curry with an A's hat, not sure I can love that All-Star any more.

My fave are the little kids, they have some great moves. So talented!
It is inspired from the 24hoursofhappy by Pharell Williams, which I had not seen the website for … where have I been?! Very cool :)

Have a great week –– xxomeli.

mucha música Monday: last edition del 2013

Well 2013 kinda started with live music and so it turns out it has been (not over yet!) a great year for checking out bands live. That, I love.
✕  I'm not a fan of best-of-year lists but this is a great short read: Eight Reasons Why We Love End-of-the-Year Lists via the newyorker
Looking forward to see fave bands and continue to randomly find gems on the local radio stations. Also learnt a ton from your comments, tweets and various others ways throughout the last year – thanks so much for sharing!
I appreciate tremendously that you continue to enjoy these Monday musical column with the few of you that still read mi blog :)

Gracias,
M.

✚ | Mexican Institute of Sound: Escríbeme Pronto
Was great to see Camilo and crew once again at the YBCA with mi fave música crew =)

✚ | Andrea Echeverri: El Fusil y La Corbata
Her new single dropped last Tuesday. So stoked.
I love you Andrea. So much.

✚ | Lorde: Team
I have been an enthusiastic follower of whatever this 17-year old young woman presents to the world since finding out about her earlier this year. I am a fan.
… “This video was borne from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was queen,”… “Dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. and of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn’t need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger.”

✚ | The Seshen: 2000 Seasons
Really digging this Oakland band. They are playing in The Chapel (SF) this Friday, Dec. 20th. for KALX's Solstice in Stereo. More than a few years ago I submitted a few designs (for shirts, or an anniversary print? I forget) for KALX, I'll have to dig into my scanned archives at some point.

✚ | Joel Gion: YES
The BJM's Joel wrote this. SF's favorite tambourine player.

✚ | Phantogram: Fall in Love
New single by Phantogram, though it sounds layered I thought it fell a bit flat in comparison to some of their previous material. Will be cool if the video may compensate for it? Can't wait to hear the complete new album 'Voices' (drops Feb. 2014)

✚ | La Cumbiamba NY: Avión de Papel
Fun music, found it via the David Byrne blog. Really enjoy all the NY/bridge views :)

✚ | Kitten Grenade: Gray
Just found out this SF Ukulele player, I typically don't like this type of too-cute music, but this is kinda cheering me up. –Found via thebaybridged

✚ | Hologram: Flesh and Bone
These Swedes are playing tomorrow at Bottom of the Hill.
-also via the baybridged

✚ | Bro show
Recently my mom told me she just learnt what a man-cave is from lady gaga. I was confused/concerned. She also watches the Ellen show daily. Then I said -mom, I never watch the show, I'm at I work-
She said “Ay pues fijate en el internets” -well, look in the internets- (of course sounds better en español). ohright, DUH… hahaa!

✚ | Lou/VU in NY
And if you are enthusiast of before/now imagery, you'd dig this:
Finding Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground’s photo locations in NYC via thestrut.

✚ | Betty Black: Fatality of Love
“Betty Black releases the video for “Fatality of Love” today. The smoldering and kaleidoscopic video finds her in odalisque poses and shattered reflections as she contemplates rejecting a lover before they betray her. This is the first video from the just released Fatality of Love (The Remix EP)”

✚ | March 25th, 2014
Johnny Cash, new album.
Heard about this on the AM radio, my mouth was opened for quite a bit…
“Out Among the Stars” drops March 25th | Out Among The Stars, A Lost Johnny Cash Album, Coming March 25, 2014 Newly Discovered Studio Album Premieres 12 Previously Unreleased Tracks

✚ | Dr. Maya Angelou: His Day is Done - A Tribute Poem for Nelson Mandela

I love her. I got to see her 2 Sundays ago.
BELLEZA musical.

✚ | The Shoes: Wasting Time
The shoes like the bikes and the young men in their videos. The youth The cool :)

✚ | The Shoes: People Movin

✚ | Billie Joe Armstrong & Norah Jones: Foreverly
Norah y Billy Joe cover the Everly's and Foreverly was dropped last week. How'bout that?!
Below, the lyric version.
For the last few Decembers I have enjoyed getting into total folk-mode, will be headed to the music store in west portal, amoeba or aquarius soon to buy the CD – this will be a great road trip addition.
Liking this very much so, what do you think?
You can listen to their interview here: [NPR] ‘Foreverly’ Yours: Billie Joe Armstrong And Norah Jones Get Close

✚ | We Are The Brave: Sparrow
We Are the Brave were formed in Sydney, Australia. Easy synth pop to listen to after the 2pm coffee dose.

✚ | Natalie Duncan - Devil In Me (Live from Universal Studios)
Found this via Patrina's tumblr, so good :)

✚ | My Brightest Diamond "Be Brave"
Then I found this via Patrina's hubby Dave, los fantastic!

Last but not least, Outkast is reuniting. Are they for real?!

I received a nice email from Emanuel, an industrial designer promoting his cool magnetics lights. I like the video, it is video is ultra simple and catchy :)

✚ | David Lynch: Bad The John Boy
The latest and greatest by the man from Missoula, dropped a single this past week. Be ready to trip, or space out. Or maybe too weird for headphones. Apropos for a Monday morning, I suppose.

✚ | Dukes of Chutney: Domino

✚ | WorldBicycleRelief: Mobilize Me
Inspiring work.
“Imagine racing the sun just to get by. People across rural Africa face this challenge every day. Without adequate transportation, access to vital resources such as healthcare, education and economic opportunity is often out of reach. When you donate to World Bicycle Relief, you mobilize entrepreneurs, healthcare workers and students as they fight to feed their families, build their businesses, treat the sick, finish school, follow their dreams and change their world.”

✚ | Digital_Me: Bike Rider - Smile From The Streets Of Rothschild
Shay aka Digital_me:
Nov4 - Bike Rider is a 4 parts concept mix, trying to share the experience of listening to music while riding bikes in Tel Aviv, all in a sample-full hip-hop attitude.

✚ | Winners
Oct.2013: “The Sweet Ones new video featuring the single "BOBBY TIGHTEN UP" from TSO's new record due out this spring. Filmed as a satirization of an 80's style bike movie and gag reel spoof, The Sweet Ones continue carrying the torch of Quirk- Rock.”

✚ | Allies for Everyone: You & Me
According to mi email, this album dropped Tuesday last week. This is light tingy synth-pop to space out at work and think of a weekend bloody mary with blazing fog non-existent sun rays…

✚ | Anna Calvi: Eliza
Last and definitely not least, what a voice. Just learnt about Anna Calvi via the BayBridged as she played at the Independent last night, which I missed. English women, born with such solid pipes. Liking her so far.

sincerely, xxom.

mucha música monday: local love

Short + super sweet post for Howell Devine.
This past weekend KT + I headed over to Club Deluxe for late-nite pizza & some spirits. Howell Devine is a fun jazz/blues beats local band, and they played a few sets that night. What seemed like their super no.1 fan completely stole the show, dancing to the music the entire time with such freedom and passion.

Hands up. Hands down. Lyrics. Pause.
Turn. Stand. Hips. Move in place.
And his Rolling Stones 50th anniversary shirt.

He must have been a bit over 60 and the youngest at heart amongst us, the happiest person in that very moment. And as the small, packed and pleased audience, it was as refreshing as it was enjoyable.

video from their website/youtube channel:

- -
As of for me, this was a good weekend with great company. I don't always get to see many of my friends within two days. Very grateful to savor every moment. This is the only foto I took this weekend (and a couple of my friends' cats, of course)
howell devine

I think my twitter pal Andy will like this, he has in the past commented/
tweeted to share great bands+music :)

mucha música monday: noviembre

✚  |  La Mecánica Popular: La Paz del Freak

✚  |  DJ Equal: Lost in the Evening
DJ Equal is from NC, based in NY. I found this pretty good listening to this after my 3rd cup of coffee and before noon. good balance of mellow and modern hip soft talk from what sounds like a young 20something voice. I'll take it.

✚  |  Emptied Gestures Art
Beautiful!

✚  |  Cass McCombs - Dreams ComeTrue Girl
bikes y skateboards. muy bien :)

✚  |  Trails & Wails: Nunca
Found out about this band, playing in November via the NewParish email newsletter, cool stuff.
“we are four people and we write pop songs out of dreams and mistranslations. after we met at & graduated from Berkeley, Emma lived in Spain, and Keith in Brazil. at start of 2012 we were all home, full of ideas & obsessions for new words & sounds we'd learned, and we made a band. we all sing & write together, in lyrics crossing between spanish, portuguese & english.”

mucha música monday

✖ | María del Pilar: Huaso de Los Angelitos
Glad I've subscribed to one of my favoritas Angelina email newsletter, I get all kinds of awesome update doses on what Pilar is up to with música y all. This video is super cute, all those hats - also she featured her dad, and the beauty of being around horses. ¡muy bonito!
“…directed by Helder Sun + Ally Garrett. Featured is the Club de Huasos USA from San Bernardino, CA where we filmed on their ranch all the horses and huasos. Gepe and I are filmed overlooking Downtown Los Angeles at Angel's Point in Elysian Park. My father also makes a cameo. Can you figure out who he is in the video?…” -via María Del Pilar's newsletter.

✖ | Upstairs Downstairs: Parkas Indoors
Easy to listen to music. I like that.
[via thebaybridged – Jason Shane] “…Self-described purveyors of “dreamy, folk-tinged indie rock,” Upstairs Downstairs crafted an ethereal and mysterious thirty-five minute follow-up to their debut, 2010′s Inland and Out. The new album bounces between borderline shoegaze material and folk rock, driven by moving vocal melodies (led by Ford’s powerful voice) and McGraw’s intricate and often soaring guitar work. It’s a gripping record from start to finish, pulling inspiration from a myriad of influences.”

✖ | Coo Coo Birds: Mariposa Venenosa

Also found out about San Francisco-based band los Coo Coo Birds via theBayBridged. Scruffy sticky sounds y repetitive messy riffs. Me gusta.
You may have heard their music already via the locally based GpPro commercials.

✖ | Cat Doorman: Madame Claire
I found out about this Californian now based in Portland via the currently happening through the end of October at a library near you – SFPublicLibrary 2013 Tricycle Music Fest.
Love her voice and energy, so positive and calming.
Cat Doorman is Julianna Bright: “…musician, an artist, a mom and a big believer in the power of art, story and song to make us kinder, braver, better humans.”

✖ | Meneo: Vamo A Ve
A ver, a ver (let's see/lemme see/we'll see) if this tune boosts your energy, or reminds you of adults doing aerobics with flourescent outfits, LA Gears and leg warmers while you were too busy playing with hot wheels (you= me.)

---

✖ | Ibi Ego: Hookie
Ibi Ego is a band from Tijuana, found via TheBlogofJulioRomero. A cup of Zoé mixed with a half-cup de Babasónicos, and add a dash of simplified industrial synths ala New Order.

✖ | but first, coffee
treat yourself to a good cup of unpretentious coffee, or tea.
it's my birthday this week and that is my favorite thing to do with loved ones, friends.

foto by KT. i no longer have blond hair. or any hair, for that matter.
Meeting Meli to discuss ideas

mucha música Monday: late september

+ ISEO POMPALEO
Learnt this past week about iSeo from Barcelona via mundoflaneur [article/interview here] and I like her. In her poetic playful words:
“iSeo es mi alter ego. Ella duerme en mi interior y cuando se despierta, cantamos, componemos melodías y nadamos en una burbuja.”[translation by me] → iSeo is my alter ego. She sleeps within me and when she awakens, we sing and we compose melodies, we swin in a bubble
¡¡♥!!

+ MISTER LOVELESS
Cool video produced by local cats PerezBros with very familiar night scenes.
Found this one via the BayBridged on America's cup concerts [link]
Blogged posts blasts from the past, a few past stockton tunnel posts here, here y here.

+ BLOOD ORANGE
This goes to a special Guyanese en Nueva York that is of the handful of you música fans out there that enjoy my Monday música doses – ¡gracias! I'm inspired by his moves. I'm going to try that next Friday night… ;-))
–via Pitchfork– “I decided to visit Georgetown, Guyana for the first time the town where my mother is from. She, herself has not been back for 30 years, 3 years before I was born. I tracked down family members, including my 92 year old grandfather, who I had never met before. In this video you will see our first ever meeting.”

+ ENIGMA
A few weeks ago I had this Enigma song which was so popular in the mid-90s stuck in my head for a few seconds only.. Thought I'd share.

+ TUNES4TUBES
The following 3 videos are bands playing at the Tunes4Tubes tomorrow Tuesday 9/26 at the Rickshaw Stop here in San Francisco.
▲ CON BRIO | Saw them first time bit over 3 years ago [2010 post] and really enjoyed them.

▲ WHISKERMAN | the video was filmed in Oakland. Awesomesauce. Wouldn't be complete without a cameo appearance by the green and gold. Go A's!

▲ CRADLE DUENDE | from the bike music fest a few years ago:
“Sounds, sights, and sceneries during Cradle Duende's performance at the 6th Bicycle Music Festival, the largest 100% bicycle-powered music festival in the world, at Old Cabin Meadow in Golden Gate Park. Cradle Duende is a combination of Kezmer and Flamenco to be coined 'Klezmenco" with a new twist of latin, reggae, and ska influence to get people dancing when necessary.”

mucha música Monday: septiembre

Well we are now in September. 2013 you are a strange one, feel like I'm just starting to know you and you will be gone shortly.
Here are the latest news, shows I've attended and recent musical finds I thought I'd share with you.

EL CAFE TACUBA
Café Tacuba. Got to see them for the billionth time. Third time w/la Calitexican in the Bay Area.
m.  a.  g.  i.  c.  a.  l.
Their shows are jumping. Non-stop jumping.
But for a change here is their vocal twist. Meme. Everything he sings, he does it with his beating, dripping hot heart on his sleeve. Hot damn.
ALERTA: Bikes, cross-gender roles, makeouts y a very sexy voice:

And Japan, jumping non-stop:

And the timeless 90s unplugged, pure goodness:

♥PILAR!
Oh Pilar. We love you so much. Asides bikes +the internets, I think it was the same 2006 or 07(?) show la Calitexican and I were both at, without knowing each other (yet!) at the Great American with Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto opening para ti
→AND→ she recently replied to one of my tweets… IMELTED-IMELTEDDD♥ESCÁNDALO!

She has new material out: The story behind "Huaso de Los Angelitos" music video+song:

Also, not sure if ever showed this video when the Los Abandoned were still together. Super cute is an understatement.
ALERTA: bicis, nite rides, lights y hearts. ♥AY!

LOS PIXIES
A new 4song EP is out this month, hadn't seen the video until this past week. Remind me of Enigma a bit. Here is their latest:

TV ON THE RADIO
Good song to wrap up and listen to during the homestrech of the workday, me thinks:

MY BLOODY VALENTINE
They have an upcoming show in Mexico City this week. rad!

THE BLACK ANGELS
ALERTA: One of my favorite bands.
I've also seen them numerous times in the last few years throughout the state. Last sold-out concert this past May in San Francisco was at the local & legendary quasi-ripoff-off-super-pricey-livenation-ticket-purchase but-we-do-it-anyways aka → The Fillmore.

Thankfully for Woody getting tix way ahead, I got to buy a ticket from him(!) A new bond was found w/MK of our mutual love for the band and a fellow other Angels fans, though I lost them once inside. However I very much enjoyed the full view from the way-back with one of my fave Texans, Big Papi. You don't mess with Big Papi. He is the best.
The latest Black Angels concert was SUPERB, as is my crush on vocalist Alex Maas… ♥besobeso!!
This new EP “Live in San Francisco” is 3-track available to share/download.
So awesome:

mucha música Monday arrives fashionably late, on martes (Tuesday)

- - -
Mondays after a national holiday are the best, so productive! – said no one ever :)
Hope you had a great 4th of July weekend.

I enjoy reading frequently about music and about bands that are soon playing in the Bay Area though I haven't made it out to many shows lately. Love listening, checking out new bands and re-discovering beats from a wide range of genres. I seem to find about bands from reading magazines, the paper, podcasts, some internet and word of mouth.

How do you find out about new music? What new music have you discovered or have been playing on repeat lately?
Hope you continue to enjoy some of my findings.
xxom

Pixies: Bagboy
First and foremost: Did you know this is the first Pixies song in more than a decade?
We know this aint SF because plastic bags don't seem to exist here anymore (and all bags cost ya 10¢ at the stores so BYOB) Oh, y Bagboy rides a bike.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Despair
Hard to believe that it has been a decade since I walked into the now defunct Tower Records to buy the Fever to Tell CD, which didn't come out of the walkman for many days. Straight.
Karen O, I love you.

Ondatropica: At the Cuban Jazz Cafe (LIVE)
I have seen Quantic y Totó la Momposina live in San Pancho (NOTE: BOTH AMAZING, videos below) –Ondatropica– would be a future, imperative must.
“What do you get when Quantic, an English producer and musician with a background in hip-hop, electronic dance music, soul, funk, and dub reggae, moves to Cali, Colombia, and teams up with seasoned local musicians, members of Bogotá’s alternative music scene, and Chilean MC Ana Tijoux?” –G.Moskowitz for The Daily Beast

And since I referenced them, here are the aforementioned
good times [Biking to Stern Grove 2009 post] Ade, James +i were there :)
Toto: ¿Aronde me meto yo?

Quantic y su Combo Bárbaro - Canoa Rancha
Nidia Bómbora is beyond captivating. Was lucky to see their show at Slim's with my good GF Diana a few years ago. I still have that poster. So amazing live(!)

Love Songs to the Castros
Found this gem on univision via the power correspondent power duo Damien y Diana Cano:

Fugulele (Fugazi ala ukulele)
–Fugulele, Syracuse's Fugazi all ukulele band at the Wescott Theater in Syracuse NY.–

Savages: I am here
This British sound from the all-female band hailing from London is rather propulsive. Liking them quite a bit.

mucha música monday: july 1st

Carla Morrison: Disfruto
This Baja Californiana makes you revisit the teenage poetry in you which has not really left, when puberty feelings through her music are awaken. Run away with the circus, be in love, reflect on the train tracks or all three. She hails from Tecate, that quiet border town that lives hidden behind Tijuana's flamboyant presence, which seems to be somehow stuck a few decades back in time with its charm living alongside the industrial modernization, where that dark-red and golden label beer comes from and kick ass pan dulce is made with a free cup of coffee with your purchase. Tecate, you have always treated me well.

Lynch y Lykke Li: I'm Waiting Here
Here is Lynch's birthday post (January), this song awakens the summer road trip senses.
His new album The Big Dream drops Tuesday, July 16th.

Miguel: Adorn
I recently learnt about Miguel after seeing his flawless portrait on the cover of Paper magazine. I liked this song but the video don't make much sense to me. Could be the tale of the 10year high school reunion, have you attended any? Not me..

Florence Welch & Dev Hynes (Cover Icona Pop): I Love It
I have listened to this more than a few times in the past few nights.
Florence. Dev.

From the HumanRightsCampaign youtube channel: Straight allies, Florence Welch and Dev Hynes join a growing list of musicians standing with the Human Rights Campaign on the right side of history. Equality Rocks!”

Mercury & Bowie: Under Pressure
If you are ready to get goosebumps, listen now. Found via this post at TheStrut

Bleached: KEXP live studio performance
I had mentioned Bleached back in late-February, they are indeed playing in San Francisco soon (Saturday, July 13th). Here is a 16 minute studio performances from May this year, recorded live in Seattle at KEXP.

Lorde: Royals
Her first official video is out. I made a premature prediction this past April about this Auckland young woman, I knew she'd be big. Mind you, she is still in high school…

mucha música Monday: on the radio

One of the things I often, if not daily, is “I heard it on the radio.”
Even if I can only catch it for a few minutes, I try to listen to the radio everyday.
I like finding out events, some news, music +unexpected interviews. It keeps things interesting, fresh +a bit random.
Some of my local fave stations/shows I try to listen as often as I can:
KPFA 94.9 “Rock en Rebelión” Sundays
KPFA 94.9 “La Onda Bajita” Fridays
KPOO 89.5 out of the Western Addition
KNBR for some sports updates (I was an avid Barbieri follower at some point)
KALX 90.7 CAL I do forget about it, but I used to religiously when I worked in Berkeley a few years ago.

KCBS 740AM newsnewsnews
Others possible by the internet with listen-now links:
KEXP in Seattle: their Sonarchy show available as podcast is my favorite
KCRW Santa Monica/Los Angeles in particular Raúl Campos
89.3 The Current in Minnesotta via their youtube channel.
Anyways, that's my curiosity path to continue to explore, divert +listen to some different happenings through a not so old +I sure hope never-to-be obsolete form of communication, the radio. I do miss KUSF, however. Anyone else was also a big fan of DJ Schmeejay in the mornings?
OK -- onto la música:

Peace: Ocean's Eye & Follow Baby
First time listening to these British young band on KCRW a few weeks ago. Like them so far. Their album dropped over a month ago “In Love”. Clever junction of band name +album title, right.

Brainfruit
I was catching up with some of the Sonarchy archives from KEXP, when I heard a set by Brainfruit. You could even read a book if you needed this as copmany background noise. I enjoyed the 1hr set, though here is a shorter one I found through their bandcamp site:

JD McPherson: Dimes for Nickels
Here is cool live performance recently shared by @DirtyCyclist of KEXP in Austin for SXSW, broadcasting from the Mellow Johnny's bike shop:
thanks for sharing!

Phantogram: Don't Move
I fell in love with When I'm Small in 2011. That black hair, black tank +all that um bouncing, as well as his beard. Ohmy. They have that pretty modern-ear candy sound +layered live, I must say I'm a fan.
[file under] → M E S M E R I Z I N G  M O N D A Y…

What's your favorite radio station? Do you have any radio rituals?
Hope you enjoyed this radio segment as much as I putting it together.

Mucha música Monday

Lumerians: The bloom

The Vaccines: Blow it up
Pretty cool they are playing soon in DF: Mexico City in May

Tripple N-ples: Off the dancefloor remix
Lunatic delusion party! From Tokyo, Japan
→ → NOTE  The video below is NSFW so here is their stream, for safer measures: on soundcloud

Iron and Wine: Joy
Can't say I'm a fanatic of their music much, BUT I find this video quite beautiful +well crafted. Image quality +its crisp textures are pretty out of control. Further reading/watching: the making of - via thisiscolossal

Thao and Mirah: We're Both So Sorry (Live @ Google)
Maggie of Mighty is doing daily music finds +that's how I found this sweet +sour song. Bit poetic, digging the end rougher ending.

Mucha música Monday: estrogen

Ebony Bones: Don't fart on my heart
Greatest title I've heard for some time now. Poetically correct, seriously great.
She is British and her look is as colourful as her music (awesome foto from the ladiesroom.tv) Let's start this week with this upbeat piece.

Cat Power: Manhattan
Chan Marshall’s love letter to NYC’s most famous borough.

YYY: Sacrilege
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have released their first official video. It looks a little too musical Cohen brothers to me, but well. They put a lovebird on it by featuring Lily Cole, otherwise known as Jack Dorsey's girlfriend (Twitter, Square) – you know, silicon techy big chisme around this turf, ala The real housewi-fis de San Francisco.

Lorelle meets the Obsolete: These days
This tapatío band (From Guadalajara, México) is a bit on the psych spectrum of dreamy mellow melodies. The sound reminds me a bit of Galaxy 500 layered with loops of shoegaze-y repetitive vocals. Most of these bands sound good with headphones on computers, but then they sound great live. Hope they make it to the Bay Area at some point, I mean they are opening for The Cure in Mexico (this April). Not bad!
Learn about this duo here: Lorelle meets the Obsolete [about].

Chasms: Darker outside
Speaking of mellow, here is a new video by local band Chasms.

Lala Romero: Residue
Came across this new release gem via Gabriella of MISS.
Hawt.

Lorde: The Love Club & a remix
Behold. She is a 16-year old from New Zealand. She will be huge.

ok, have a great week.

Mucha música Monday: cholos, rolas y photography

Cholo adventures: That Foo Stole my Bike (part 1)
Aw, brand new bike. From Toys R Us. These cholitos are silly fun.

Shinning Soul: Get up
Phoenix Hip Hop duo, Shining Soul, drops their first single 'Get Up' of their next full length project, Sonic Smash.
“Young, gifted and brown…” found via the PhoenixSpokesPeople on FB

Kid Frost: This is for la raza
Shinning Soul mentions a Kid Frost line in the above song, so for reminiscing youth beats where we puberty chicas would be just calling everyone estupidass baboso. Here it is.
QEUVO.

Kinto Sol: En mi lowrider
Keep those ranflas brincando.

Eriberto & Estevan Oriol

Eriberto & Estevan Oriol
The Los Angeles chicano roots run deep in culture, community and the arts. Amongst one of my biggest inspirations to take black and white photography courses after high school was Eriberto Oriol. His son is also a photographer, and I didn't learn about an exhibit they had together until just recently “Like Father, Like Son” (October 2011, Culver City). Pretty rad.

As a California native, it has been great to learn about Chicano artist and pioneers that have paved the way and become influential for generations to come; for example in the video below, Eriberto mentions the moment when he realizes the power his photography had during the movement of his community uprising in Barrio Logan, just south of downtown San Diego.
He is a legendary artist I admire, and hope you enjoy his work.

Here are two brief videos about him, by his son Estevan.

Los Angeles and San Diego are quite different from Northern California but they are no less beautiful and rich in culture, with deep Chicano history and movements.
I love my homestate; from Tijuana to the Bay.

cdza
Have you all heard of these fine musician enthusiasts? I just learnt about them +LOVE them.
Their youtube channel is full of great clips, what an amazing group of talented smilemakers.
Jurassic park, OMG I melted.

Additional bits; motivation doses/reminders
Here are four videos that have made somewhat of an impact in these past few days. Their message is rather similar, various perspectives. It could be quick to forget to be in touch within ourselves.

Not a fan of the Foo Fighters much, but man Dave Grohl, your speech is quite something.
And he is a coffee junkie, I knew it. As I get older, I've truly begun to understand the meaning of the parallel between men and good wine.
Anyways, hope you enjoy the following as much as I did:

Get to the serious, by focusing on the silly

Anchor California Lager
Im such a proud Californian, but that is known. Anchor Steam Lager's label is just so beautiful, I want a patch, a shirt, I don't know I really really want something with that label on!
Also, I recently had the pleasure to learn tons about beer in great company with Kristin y la CTX, more on that later.

I was writing about starting over
“Back then I wrote about my dog, my bike +my dad. 20 yrs later I was at it again; drums, the guitar, to the coffee maker. I was writing about starting over”
Dealing with a tragic loss leaves the deepest of scars no one can possibly describe, I wish it to no one yet there is an immediate bond when a mutual human condition is exposed, and so vulnerable.
This speech hit hard and perhaps some unspoken feelings that are quite impossible to describe.
Here is the link to the video, also available in audio form:
Dave Grohl's SXSW 2013 Keynote Speech (46minutes)
And if you've read this far I wanted to thank you; and I'm glad I have this creative outlet and that in very small bits, I am able to somehow express myself and share some things, Etc. My life has changed, and everything changes. And I don't know what else to say.

Have a good week, I'll go get me some coffee now.
